Have your cake and eat it too
Its your birthday!
As I see it there are many ways to throw a birthday party. The common activity at any birthday party is eating the cake. What process did you go through the last time you planned a birthday party? Take a moment to recall who the party was for, who attended, where it was hosted and most importantly how the cake was made and experienced. When I was a child my mother and I would make a cake from scratch by following the recipe from an old cookbook. We worked with each other to combine all the ingredients together. Overall, it was a low cost-effective way to make a cake.
As I got older we stopped baking our cake from scratch with the cookbook, we would make a cake with a pre-mixed box from the store. It was just as cost-effective, but it saved us time. The extra time was used to plan and execute a better party! Understanding the convenience provided by a cake mix in a box, many local bakeries and grocery stores began offering pre-made cake baking services. Purchasing a cake from the store is more expensive, so why do we do it? Why would we spend more money to end up with the same thing?
We are paying for a service that offers us convenience and expertise, which means we save time and get a better cake. On my 7th birthday I wanted a monster truck birthday cake. My mother could not create such a cake, but she knew she could purchase one from the local grocery store. My reaction at the time was, “this is the best cake ever!”
If you think about it, a birthday is more than a party. And, even the cake is an experience. It is a memorable milestone moment that can last forever in the mind of everyone attending the party. Knowing this there has been a dramatic increase in businesses that offer birthday experiences. Event companies and party planners have learned to transform an ordinary birthday into an extraordinary experience, with a price tag to match. While writing this, I google searched luxury birthday experience and found a site that offers birthday parties on a private chartered plane. Why would anyone spend $50k on a birthday?? For the experience!!
We live in a world in which experience is more valuable than ever before. As a consumer, we choose to spend our money where we see the most value. As a business owner, we choose to provide goods, or services but the leading companies offer an additional layer of value, experience. It seems obvious but the future of business is in providing a better experience for customers. The businesses that do this will have their cake and be able to eat it too.
